ESD Theme Document: Water
The Canadian Sustainability Curriculum Review Initiative is a project of Learning for a Sustainable Future (LSF) that focuses on key themes supporting the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014). Each theme identifies what learning research indicates are suitable for children to address at various stages in their development.
These theme documents are intended primarily as resources to support curriculum policy change but are also of relevance to teacher professional development and the design of learning resources and learning programs. The intent of this work is to help bridge research, policy and practice.
Connecting students to the complexity of water issues in preparation for decision making as active citizens in their communities.

Resources for Rethinking - www.r4r.ca
Water Education Learning Programs Currently Available to Educators
Resources for Rethinking is a project developed by Learning for a Sustainable Future. R4R.ca provides teachers access to lesson plans and other teaching resources, that integrate environmental, social and economic spheres through learning that is interdisciplinary and action oriented. Each R4R resource has been reviewed by an experienced classroom teacher and matched to relevant curriculum outcomes for all provinces and territories.
R4R is searchable by language, grade, subject and sustainability theme. There are over 700 resources on the database, produced by government ministries, boards of education, subject associations and non-governmental organizations, including 138 water themed resources.

Project FLOW (For the Love Of Water) engages elementary and secondary students in hands-on experiential projects that model for students what responsible, active citizenship looks like, preparing them to be stewards of our water resources and engaging them in action that addresses local water issues and concerns. Teacher workshops, seminars and symposia –from one hour information sessions through to comprehensive three day Water Themed Education institutes, including those under Project FLOW.
Review of current policy and recommended enhancements for ESD content through to implementation planning.
