Workshop Description: From the ground up Indigenous peoples from the Northeast Woodlands have contributed numerous scientific discoveries that are applied in STEM. Delve into the unique aspects of being an oral history people and discover how First Nations communicated their science and ways of knowing. We will also explore the methods used to preserve this knowledge for future generations through wampum.
Prep/Materials:

Workshop Description: This workshop looks at the impact invasive species have had on culturally significant trees in Mi’kma’ki and the effect of this on certain art forms and traditions. It also provides students with knowledge of how to identify and report invasive species to prevent their spread and minimize further damage. This workshop uses two-eyed seeing to apply western conservation concepts to protect threatened species that are significant to L’nu in Mi’kma’ki.

Workshop Description: Lets learn about the interconnection with the forest and how this ecosystem collaborates, is kind, and is generous. How might we consider plants as our teachers and reclaim the interconnection of our more-than-human-kin who guide us and also give up their lives for us. Why are the Rooted Nations (trees) so important, and how might they be able to help and support us?
Prep/Materials Needed:
- Students should have paper & a writing utensil

- Check out The Mother Tree Project, a research initiative working with BC First Nations to explore innovative strategies for enhancing carbon storage, protecting biodiversity, and promoting forest regeneration in a rapidly changing environment

LoriAnn Bird is an Indigenous Metis herbalist and educator who introduces folks to wild, native and medicinal plants, sharing knowledge and the interconnection with all that exists.
Workshop Description: This event will be in the style of a quiz night, with teams competing in environmental trivia! Classrooms can compete against each other, or you can divide into teams within your classroom. Topics include Recycling, Traditional Ecological Knowledge, Sustainability, and Climate Change.
Prep/Materials Needed:
- Split the classes into groups of of 4-6 students
- Each team will need pen and paper to write guesses to the questions
- Each team may choose a team name to add to the fun!

Workshop Description: The VIDEA team will be sharing each of their respective stories, highlighting the diversity of ways that they take climate action in their everyday lives and how they are working together to center Indigenous knowledge. As a case study, they’ll explore their efforts to reconnect with the North Saskatchewan River through youth-led restoration work.

Our Action Project Planning workshop will show you what an Action Project looks like and help you consider your interests and skills, your sphere of influence, and the root causes of the issue so you can take on the best Action Project ever!

Workshop Description: In this session, students will explore a circular economic model in relation to the problem of plastic waste in the environment. Through examination of the Plastic Problem and technological solutions to plastic waste, students will feel empowered to address this complex issue and close the loop on plastic.

Workshop Description:
This interactive workshop will explore climate change impacts and solutions through the Climate Atlas of Canada, an engaging online tool for students, researchers, decision-makers, and communities. As an example, we will look at the health impacts of climate change and students will have the opportunity to participate in a “treasure hunt” to find the answers on the site themselves.
